Fujitsu's PalmSecure reads your palm: outlook good

Fujitsu's PalmSecure reads your palm: outlook good: "Filed under: Laptops, Peripherals Privacy fiends, rejoice! If you're not yet satisfied with iris scanning, fingerprint reading, and voice recognition, it looks like Fujitsu's finally bringing a new smaller 35 x 35 x 17mm version of their palm-vein scanning PalmSecure biometrics system to a laptop near you. Nah, we're not gonna be happy until we have to urinate into a cup and provide a DNA sample every time we unlock our corporate machines (you know what they say about loose lips and sinking ships), but until then at least we'll be adequately protected assuming someone doesn't chop off our hands, gouge out our eyes, and record our voice (preferably not at the same time, anyway).

Inline Skate Speedometer Watch

Inline Skate Speedometer Watch: "From the busy labs of Hammacher comes a wristwatch-looking gadget designed to help inline skaters (rollerbladers, for the cool kids reading) keep track of their travels. The Inline Skate Speedometer wirelessly communicates with a special wheel on the skate, measuring speed and distance traveled. The package comes with an adapter to ensure that the included wheel fits on any pair of inline skates. At $139.95, the Inline Skate Speedometer could make the daily trek around the neighborhood a little more interesting.

Seagate launches Wireless USB drives

Seagate launches Wireless USB drives: "Filed under: Wireless, Storage
Everybody remember those Wireless USB Seagate hard drives we saw at CES? C'mon, you've got to, they were the first proper WUSB devices we've seen in the wild. Well, ready or not, they've gone from prototype to production in the last couple of months and Seagate's announcing them at IDF this week, so if you want to get your mitts on 'em, it shouldn't be long now. We might also mention they announced a whole slew of other random hard drives (Barracuda 7200.9, Momentus 5400.3, Momentus 5400 FDE, Momentus 7200.1) but really, you're not gonna get much more interesting than a freakin' wireless drive (unless maybe you're talking about terabyte platters or something).

The Brain Computer Interface

The Brain Computer Interface

We're still in the extremely early days of neural computing interfaces, but make no mistake about it, when it comes to directly connecting our brains to our hardware, we're ready and rearin' when the gear is. And lucky us, apparently at least one such system will be shown this week at CeBIT developed by none other than Fraunhofer: the aptly and succinctly dubbed Brain Computer Interface (we'd prefer something a little snappier, say, like the Computer Brain Interface, but whatevs). The system reads brain-waves from 128 scalp electrodes -- very slowly, mind you -- and apparently over the last couple of years they've already honed the device to control a pointer and enable trained users to actually write a sentence with their mind alone (even though it may take between five and ten minutes to do so)

ProductDose's Top 10 Geek Watches

ProductDose's Top 10 Geek Watches: "ProductDose has a fun collection of 'Top 10 Geek Watches,' including some you've seen on Gizmodo before, but quite a few that you haven't. We're particularly fond of the styling of the Nixon Dictator Watch [pictured], which records up to 3.5 minutes worth of sound to be played back at pre-defined intervals. Yes, 3.5 minutes is way too short, but maybe Nixon will update it with some modern tech soon while keeping the retro looks.

On its right side, there's a conventional QWERTY keyboard, but on the left is the fun stuff: among others, it has three thumb keys and 11 keys that can be assigned to a variety of weapons in your favorite first-person shooter. The keyboard uses a routine called “phantom limitation capabilities” that allows seven simultaneous keystrokes without sending Windows XP into a tizzy. Perhaps this is just the tool you need to teach that pro gamer Fata1ity a lesson. Or not. Find out for $40. Microsoft Fingerprint Reader gives up your prints

Microsoft Fingerprint Reader gives up your prints: "Filed under: Peripherals If you've got a Microsoft Fingerprint Reader hooked up to your PC and thought you had the latest and greatest in biometric security, you're out of luck. A Finnish researcher has discovered that the reader -- which Microsoft has said shouldn't be used to protect sensitive data (meaning, we assume, you should just use it to check out those wild whorls) -- sends fingerprint info to the PC unencrypted, which could enable anyone with the right tools to snag your fingerprint image, and use it to log into your PC. Strangely, Microsoft licenses the technology from another company, Digital Persona, which does encrypt fingerprint data. For some reason, however, Microsoft chose to disable encryption in its product, making it less secure than the passwords it purports to replace.

Dry Your Hands in Six Seconds With the Jet Towel

Dry Your Hands in Six Seconds With the Jet Towel: "One of Mitsubishi’s more interesting products is finally making its way stateside. Available in Japan for nearly a decade, the Jet Towel is a hand dryer that not only dries your hands in double-quick time (about five to six seconds), but actually helps the environment, too. It eliminates the need for wasteful paper towels, saving Mother Nature’s precious trees. (PHBs take note: the Jet Towel may save money in the long-term as electricity is the only cost.) There’s little additional waste to be found other than the water that collects in its drain tank, keeping the executive wash room nice and clean. So if you’re in the market for a hand dryer for the office bathroom, or are just tired of seeing filthy paper towels strewn about, perhaps you should keep your eyes peeled for the Jet Towel.

Celebs showered with tech gifts at the Oscars

Celebs showered with tech gifts at the Oscars: "Filed under: Cellphones, Digital Cameras, Misc. Gadgets, GPS, Peripherals

That magical night known as the Academy Awards is upon us, where celebrities put aside their petty squabbles and come together in a self-serving show of star worship, and more importantly (for our purposes, at least), limited edition electronics that are shamelessly bandied about in hopes of becoming the next celeb gadget-du-jour. Besides the iced-out Kodak V570 and special edition PEBL that we showed you previously, PC Mag has discovered several other gadgety gifts that will be bestowed upon the presenters, winners, and even the losers at tonight's Oscars. Among the rest of the swanky gift bag items will be a Vonage VTech Broadband VoIP phone system, the ip8100, that will go to presenters, as well as Solar StyleOne solar chargers for those who show up in green rides ('I'm telling you, my Hummer is modified to run on biodiesel- now gimme my damn charger!'). Losers will take home a less-glitzy GPS car monitoring device from Drive Sync, which seems more functional than a statuette but less aesthetically pleasing in a trophy case.

DS Lite exposed (SFW)

DS Lite exposed (SFW): "Filed under: Gaming

Continuing a sacred tradition that must have begun when Charles and Vincent Chevalier tore apart their first sliding wooden box camera and photographed the insides with their second camera, the Nintendo DS Lite is the latest gadget to find itself stripped and posed for a pr0nographic photo shoot. Follow along as the brave test subject goes from fully assembled handheld console to a splayed-out pile of plastic, fasteners, and circuit boards, somehow managing to retain a quiet dignity throughout. Keep clicking for a few more pics or hit the 'Read' link for the full 'monty'...
